Alhamdulillah, by the Grace of Allah, we have carried out our second major update of SunnahOnline.com ahead of the blessed Hajj 1436H. As part of this move, we've also moved to a more powerful server which should result in improved speeds, functionality and generally a better user experience insha'Allah. Below are some of the new features you can expect to find:
- One simple template for all articles;
- A much improved mobile browsing experience;
- A new, better functioning image gallery;
- More poetry;
- Public commenting for all articles using Disqus;
- Ability to share pages with your friends on your favourite Social Network site; and
- Improved searching and tagging.
This is just the start of our move to the new system, and insha'Allah in the future you should see many more changes that will lead, by the permission of Allah, to a better experience for you all. Quite a few of the pages need updating to fit into the new website core (particularly Islamic Lectures) so please be patient whilst we carry these out.
We'd love to hear what you think or if you want to suggest any improvements we can make - please contact us to let us know.
Updates on the 2nd update!
Hajj 1436H: The re-launched site is a fully responsive experience meaning that it will look (largely) the same on your mobile and on your PC/Mac. Still lots of work to do but we're excited with the potential!
Updates on the update!
February 2, 2014: Alhamdulillah, it's been a while since our last update. We're now in full flow with updating the site with new content including some stuff that has fallen off the internet(!). Since the last update, we've also got the new poetry section up and running as well as the image gallery. The site template has moved to be partially responsive so that it will fit in with the browser screen you load it up with but there is still work to do with that. We've also launched a completely new, simpler mobile template that should offer improved viewing and functionality on mobile phones. Future plans are to launch a Qur'an recitation section, a 'Muslim Heroes' section and possibly also a call to prayer audio page ... watch this space!
October 25, 2012: Alhamdulillah, the audio migration is progressing well. We've now moved over all of the audio from the previous site except for the 'Others' section which was for speakers with less than 3 talks - this is being done now. The last talk to be moved over was Ali Al-Timimi's 17 part Usul ul-Fiqh lecture, may Allah release him.
October 16, 2012: We've migrated our mailing list from Yahoo! Group to our own host meaning that we can manage content fully (no more uncontrolled adverts from Yahoo!). It also means we can message much better content from our newsletters.
October 10, 2012: Having carried out the initial update to our new content management system, we've upgraded again to Joomla 2.5. This is a completely new version so required quite a lot of work. Insha'Allah the new version is more stable, more functional and more secure. Importantly, it also allows for subcategories which is functionality we were previously missing.
The History of SunnahOnline.com
For those of you who are regular or historic users of the site, you'll know that the old site (which is still there by the way!) was a bit of a muddle. In fact, if you browse through the old site you'll see sections that haven't been updated since back in 2000 and templates we thought we had got rid of. Nonetheless, even with those issues, we've built a site that has over 1,800 HTML pages of Islamic Knowledge. On top of that, we also have uploaded a massive 2.8Gb of audio - Qur'an recitation and Islamic lectures from a wide variety of popular recitors and students of knowledge.
Now that SunnahOnline.com's systems have been updated, insha'Allah, we're going to focus on doing what we love - getting even more knowledge up on the site, whether that is new audio or new articles for the library. We hope you'll bear with us whilst this happens and thank you for your visits and your patience.
For the purposes of a bit of nostalgia (just indulge us!), we'll (very soon) be 'showing off' some of the old site designs here but for now please enjoy the new site!
